Dec 1

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to say we had a GREAT time at NBC 13 TV station.  Ms. Isem was a very gracious hostess and showed us all the ins and outs of the broadcast news business.  All of the scouts present were VERY well behaved and represented Pack 93 with excellence.  Great job to all of them; I’m really proud of you all!

In addition, anyone watching the Channel 13 news may have seen 6 Tigers in the background, as they got to go on LIVE TV!!  That was a real treat.  Wendy Zito has the footage, and we’ll try to figure a way to get it up and on the pack website (I hope!).

Just as a reminder, we have a pack meeting on Monday, December 3rd at 6:30 PM at the church.  Class “A” uniforms please!  Awards will be presented, and I’d like everyone to look their best!

Additionally, we have den meetings on the 10th and 17th of December.  Uniform for Den meetings is the Pack 93 t-shirt.  On the 10th we will go over the requirements for the Astronomy Belt loop, catch anyone up on Tiger Badge requirements if we can. and make a holiday ornament for your Christmas Tree!

On the 17th we’ll close out the year with a PARTY!  We’ll have cake and ice cream, talk about what we’ve learned throughout the year, and take a look at what we’ll be doing next year.  If anyone wants to do anything special on that day, a game or something like that, let us know.  (We might also throw in a tiny bit of training as well…)

Take care, and we’ll see you at the pack meeting!

Hey everyone!

Well, we had a GREAT turn-out for the first media outing at the radio station: TEN Tigers were spotted!  Everyone had a great time, learned a lot, and was on their best behavior.  We’re proud of all of you; you really represented the Cub Scouts well and made a positive impression on those that we met.

If you missed the radio outing, don’t fret; we have another media opportunity on Tuesday, November 27th at 5:30 located at NBC 13 TV studios on 1732 Valley View Drive in Birmingham.  Our point of contact is Ms. Isen, and she promises to give us a great tour of the station.  Don’t hold your breath (please!), but we may even get a chance to be on TV briefly!

Because we MAY be on TV, all scouts  MUST be in Class-A uniform WITH hat and neckerchief.

We need all parents who WILL be coming to this event to email either of us by Friday, November 23rd at 12:00PM (noon), telling us how many people they will be bringing.  We need to give the people at the station as close of a head count as possible, so please make sure if you say you’ll be there, you and your son will be.  This opportunity is open to ALL tigers, even those that were at the radio station.  Plan to be done around 6:30PM.

We also have a Den Meeting on Monday, November 26 at 6:30 at the church.  Uniform is Pack 93 t-shirts.  Anthony will be there around 6:00PM if anyone has questions or needs help with completing any requirements.  We’ll be finishing up the den requirements for the Tiger Badge (Flag ceremony, Food pyramid, and tell it like it isn’t).  Additionally, we’ll be talking about the weather in order to earn the Weather Belt Loop (which includes the Water Cycle), so don’t forget to do your weather project as outlined here:

http://usscouts.org/usscouts/advance/cubscout/academics/weather.asp

All parents should bring their boy’s Tiger Cub Handbook so that we can sign off on the things that your son has accomplished.  We would like to see as many Tiger Cubs get their Tiger Badge during the December 3rd Pack meeting as possible.  It will be the last chance before the New Year and our next Pack Meeting on January 7th, 2013.  So take a look over your son’s Tiger Cub Handbook and see what he has left to do.  Most of the requirements are VERY easy and don’t take a lot of time at all.

Take some time this holiday weekend to go over the Food Pyramid and Water Cycle with your son.  It will make the presentation on Monday go a lot faster.

We look forward to seeing everyone this coming Monday for some fun and learning!  Until then, take care, and have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving!

Happy Halloween all!

Hope all the little ghosts, ghouls and goblins have a great time tonight.  As a suggestion, take around the food donation bags and let people know that your son is in Boy Scouts and you’re collecting canned goods for those in need this holiday season.  Should be a great way to help fill the bags!

This Sunday, November 4, we are planning to get together as a den to take a short hike up at Moss Rock.  Unfortunately, the Moss Rock festival is going on this weekend.  That means a lot of people, a lot of traffic, and not a lot of parking available.  I’m not sure that taking 22 first graders up there during that time is a good idea.

Instead, we’ll meet on Sunday, November 4 at 2:30 PM at Aldridge Gardens for a little hike.  We’ll meet up at the front entrance just past the parking lot and go from there.

While there, we’ll do leaf rubbings on paper, so have your son(s) bring some crayons (paper will be provided).  If you have binoculars, that would be good to bring as well.  It should be a fun time for all!

If you are unable to make it, don’t worry, there will be other hikes in the future.  Try to find time to take the whole family out on a hike this weekend or next if you can though, so your son will meet his Tiger Badge requirements.  We’ll schedule another hike for later in November at Moss Rock, as I think that hike will be more energetic and fun for the kids.  Maybe we can coordinate a picnic or something for that day.

Tigers – Your Den Meeting (for both groups) will be at the Fire Station for a tour.
Directions:
On Patton Chapel Road pass the church and you will come to a red light.
Just beyond the red light you will see the Fire Station on your left.
It is located across the street from Gwin Elementary School.
Please be there by 6:15.  Scouts should wear class “A” uniform and don’t forget to bring a light jacket and camera.

Hello Tiger Cub families!!

IMPORTANT BULLETS TO REMEMBER:

  1. Next Den Meeting: Monday, October 22, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Fire Station on 1591 Patton Chapel Road, across from Gwin Elementary School.  See below for details on what we will cover at this meeting.
  2. Popcorn sales forms and money are to be turned in at this Den Meeting.  Please try to combine all the money/checks into one check to give to the Pack.
  3. Food drive bags: We forgot to pass out the food drive bags in order to collect food for the needy.  We will have these available at the next Den Meeting.
  4. Red Ribbon Week, “Living Drug Free”: October 23-31 at your local school. Your sons may earn a badge if they attend a session at school (or Kristin will give a session on Monday night) along with making a poster using the theme “Team Up Against Drugs.”  Kristin sent out an email earlier this week about this.
  5. When your boy(s) has finished an achievement in the Tiger Cub handbook, please sign it (Akela’s signature) and date it.  Please bring the book to the Meetings and we can sign it as well.

Our last Den Meeting this past week (Monday, October 15, 2012) went extremely well considering we are all learning the ropes along with everyone else in the Tiger Den!  I hope everyone had fun making their scrapbooks.  Remember to continue adding memories to your scrapbook and at the end of their Tiger Cub reign, we will ask you all to bring them back and award prizes out to the best scrapbook!

Also at the end of our Den Meeting we handed out the Tiger Cub Immediate Recognition Emblem along with an orange bead for completing the above Den activity, making a scrapbook.  If you, the parents will help your boys in completing the other two requirements in the Tiger Cub book chapter “Making My Family Special” (Achievement 1F and 1G) we can award them the white and black beads, respectively at the next Den Meeting.  This will mean they have completed the first of their five achievements to receive their Tiger Cub badge.

What is the Tiger Cub Immediate Recognition Emblem and what do these different color beads represent?  This emblem is also known as the Tiger Cub Totem and provides recognition during the path to earn the Tiger rank badge.  As a Tiger, whenever he completes a Family, Den, or Go See It activity, he earns a bead to place on his totem.

  • A white bead for each required ‘family activity’ part he completes.
  • An orange bead for each required ‘den activity’ part he completes.
  • A black bead for each required ‘Go See It’ part he completes.
  • A yellow ‘Tiger Track’ disk for every 10 Tiger Electives he completes after earning his Tiger rank badge.

This totem is hung from the button of the right pocket with the tiger paw facing out. The beads are presented at den meetings. Once the scout has earned all 15 totem beads, he has earned his Tiger rank badge. The badge is awarded at a pack meeting and sewn onto the blue Cub Scout uniform.

Hopefully the picture on the right will help explain how to tie the black strings on and where the certain color beads go on the Totem.  If you have any difficulty in putting this all together, feel free to bring it to the next den meeting and we can help you assemble it correctly.

NEXT DEN MEETING

As mentioned above, the next Den Meeting will be held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Fire Station on 1591 Patton Chapel Road, across from Gwin Elementary School.  Parents, please work with your son(s) on requirement 2F and talking about requirement 2D with them as well.

As always, if you have any questions, please email us and we will be more than happy to answer them.  If we don’t know the answers, then we will find the people who do!
